You wouldn’t be remised for forgetting, but once you’ve signed a confession under your name Philemon’s butterfly pulls you into a black void and essentially helps you turn back the clock, or at least remember things the way they are. TL DR - Igor's relevance is diminishing in the series, so I hope that Persona 6 explores his story and gives some insight into who he is.įirstly, for clarification, Philemon appears in Persona 5, quite early on too. Maybe the villain of Persona 6 is a person from Igor's past, one who knows of his origin. Perhaps Igor will make a deal with the next protagonist in the hopes that they will help him find his creator and purpose in life, starting a Social Link that when maxed, unlocks an alternate ending where Igor comes to fully understand who he is. Which is why I hope that we get to know Igor on a more personal level in his next outing. Both Igor and the Velvet Room are becoming obsolete and useless to further the plot. It should be noted as well that Philemon's relevance has decreased dramatically since the first Persona game, serving as a major character in 1 and 2, and taking the form of a blue butterfly at save points in 3 and 4, and it is unlikely that he appears in 5 at all. Igor himself ponders if he is merely a doll or perhaps human, which is why he takes an interest in and bestows the Wild Card to humans he deems worthy of saving the world. According to his SMT Wiki page, he was originally a doll brought to life through a magic ritual conducted by Philemon, but we have no way of knowing who or what created him originally. While Igor serves Philemon, it is a complete mystery as to who created him, as it is not clear if he is human or god.

I personally believe he has become a staple of the series for all the wrong reasons, treated as a resource rather than a meaningful character, which is why I hope that he takes on a bigger role in the next game.Īs we know from the earlier titles in the series, Igor was a servant of Philemon, a deity that exists between the consciousness and unconsciousness of all souls, which is also where the Velvet Room resides. While his role in the stories of Persona is clear, his own thoughts, wishes and backstory is never explored, which ultimately makes him completely irrelevant to the story, even though he is a big part of the lore. He is undoubtedly crucial for every game's plot as well, guiding the protagonist's journey and assisting them with Persona fusion to help them grow stronger. All throughout Persona's history, Igor has been the only character to appear in every single game.
